Dual universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter (DUART) fabricated in low-power CMOS-LSI technology delivers two independent full-duplex asynchronous receiver/transmitter channels in a PLCC44 package. Each channel programs its data format independently from 5 to 8 data bits plus parity with 1, 1.5, or 2 stop bits, and selects its baud rate from 28 fixed rates, a 16-bit counter/timer, or external 1x/16x clocks up to 1 Mbit/s. Receiver and transmitter paths are buffered by 16-character FIFOs with programmable interrupt levels, RTS/CTS flow control, and per-receiver watchdog timers. The device operates from a single 3.3 V or 5 V supply over a -40 C to +85 C ambient temperature range, provides a multipurpose 7-bit input port and 8-bit output port, and supports Motorola or Intel bus interfaces in polled or interrupt-driven systems.
